How to Add a Music Bot to Discord

Adding a Discord music bot is mostly an invite + permissions problem, not a coding problem. Here is the exact Smooth flow so you are playing music in a voice channel without guessing which toggles matter.

Before you invite

Confirm you can manage the target server. Decide which voice channel will be the music room. Kick or mute duplicate music bots temporarily so commands do not collide.

Invite Smooth

Open https://smoothbot.in/invite (or Add to Discord on the site), pick your server, approve connect/speak and command permissions, then join a voice channel.

On the OAuth screen, select only the server you intend to use. After authorize, Smooth appears in the member list like any other bot user.

  • Open the official Smooth invite link
  • Choose the correct server
  • Approve bot + applications.commands scopes
  • Return to Discord

Voice and channel permissions

In Server Settings → Roles (or the channel permission overrides), give Smooth Connect and Speak in the music voice channel. If you use category overrides, check those too.

If your server hides bots from text channels, allow Smooth to see the channel where slash commands are used.

Play your first track

Join the voice channel first. Use Smooth slash commands to search or paste a Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music, or SoundCloud link.

You should hear audio within a few seconds. If not, re-check Speak permission and whether another bot already locked the channel.

Optional hardening for big servers

Limit who can run play/skip with Discord command permissions. Create a dedicated #music-commands text channel. For always-on lounges, read our 24/7 guide after basic playback works.

Done

That is the full add-a-music-bot path: invite, permissions, join voice, play. Smooth stays available as a free Discord music bot while you grow into Premium only if you need it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need admin to add Smooth?

You need Manage Server (or Administrator) on that Discord server to authorize the bot invite.

Why can I invite the bot but it will not play?

Usually missing Connect/Speak in the voice channel, a conflicting music bot, or the user is not in the same voice channel as Smooth.

Is there a download?

No desktop install. Discord music bots are invited into the server. Use /invite or the Add to Discord button.

What permissions does a Discord music bot need?

Smooth needs Connect, Speak, Use Voice Activity and slash-command permissions. Mods should also allow the bot to read messages if link-based commands are used.

Is Smooth free to use as a Discord music bot?

Yes. Smooth Main is a free Discord music bot with HD-focused playback, Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music, SoundCloud, playlists, filters and 24/7 listening. Premium tiers are optional for larger servers.
